Attractions...

The city of Popayan is a worthwhile attraction in it’s own right as an example of fine Colonial architecture. The historic centre is approximately ten blocks long by six blocks wide and so is a comfortable size for strolling around and maybe dropping into the occasional coffee shop, museum, courtyard or taking a look at one of the many elegant churches. There are some nice walks up to viewpoints overlooking the city where on a clear day there are spectacular views of Volcan Purace on one side and of the Costal Andean range on the other. In general Popayan is a small city with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere which provides an excellent base to explore the outlying attractions!

El Morro de Tulcan: This hill with a statue of City founder Sebastian Belalcazar is a view point overlooking the city. On clear days, the coastal mountains can be seen on one side and the Purace Volcano on the other. Looking over the church spires and slate roofs at around 6pm, there are often spectacular sunsets.

Rincon del Payanes: This is a small area below El Morro with artisanias for sale, a couple of coffee shops and small bars and smaller versions of some of the city’s most recognizable features such as the clock tower and bridge.

Parque Caldas: The centre of the city and four block walk from the hostel. This pedestrian only square is a nice spot to sit and watch the world go by. There are people selling typical snacks, old fashioned photographs, crafts and occasionally musicians performing.

Parque del Puente del Humilladero: A popular spot to sit out on a sunny day, this park and gardens below the bridge hosts evening concerts by local musicians the first thursday of every month as well as during festivals.
